Do you remember the feeling and exhilaration of the first day of school? Without a doubt I am you sure do (grant it I am a nerd through and through and always looked forward to homework.)!
However, most would agree that the first day of school was a chance to reconnect with friends, see who had the most fun over the summer and a chance to return to a bit of a more structured and normal schedule. One thing most probably do not think about was whether they had the right books, pens and materials for the start of the school year. In most middle class households a trip to Target or Wal-Mart was enough to get a couple pairs of jeans, pens and a backpack.
However for thousands of students in the US and throughout the world the opportunity to have the appropriate materials for school is not a simple trip to the local market or store. Actually families go through a complex decision making process to evaluate which items are most essential in terms of making sure every penny meets the different households needs.
Through the Backpack Pack project we are working to help provide students in both Peru and Bolivia the opportunity to be prepared and ready for the start of the school year. The project provides a week of fun and creative active reinforcement and the end of the week each of the students who attended at least 80% of the week receive a backpack with all they will need.
If you remember your own first day of school and the joy of it, we ask that you consider supporting us through the Backpack Project. Your donation is tax deductible and will go a long way to help a student to have a fantastic start to the school year!
