Friends of Umbrella Initiatives, it is a great joy to share with you some great news!!!
From January 6-11, 2014, we held the first ever Backpack Project in the Shawi community located in the jungle of Peru in the region of Loreto.
Through the week of work over 100 children ages 4 to 13 received a week of academic reinforcement classes, snacks, and celebrated a big closing party with the delivery of the backpack and supplies. The Project was co-led by Juan Carlos Berrios and Zulema Sanchez and assisted by 8 college students
This was the first time through working with community partners we were able to reach a very remote region of Peru located in the Peruvian Amazon. It was a tremendous challenge as the backpacks traveled by plane, boat and bus to arrive. We are extremely grateful for the work of Juan and Zulema for providing the leadership and coordination to provide improved educational opportunities for children in this remote area.
Over the next 5 weeks, 900 more children will receive a week of academic summer camp and backpack with all the supplies and materials they will need.
We encourage you to share this good news with your friends and invite them to join as this effort to improve education in Peru and all Latin America.
